Kimi Raikkonen tops the first practice session ahead of Lewis Hamilton and teammate Sebastian Vettel as Formula 1 returned to the longest and one of the most iconic track of the calendar at Spa Francorchamps.
Raikkonen was fastest but on the softest Ultrasoft compound while Hamilton was on the hardest Soft compound.
Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo were ahead of the Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas who also set the fastest time on the soft compound and later spent the time in the garage as the Finn got off track at turn 13 and slowly brushed the barriers.
Both the Mercedes drivers are using new internal combustion engines (ICEs), turbos and MGU-Hs for this weekend’s Belgian GP which are their fourth of the year. Each of the fifth component will earn a 10 place grid penalty.
Both Toro Rossos were inside the top 10 despite concerns of engine power playing a crucial part here in Spa.
Both Renaults and the Haas cars were outside the top 10 and might be looking for damage limitation this race weekend.
Esteban Ocon was 8th fastest and the only Force India driver in the top 10 and Stoffel Vandoorne with the Spec 3.6 engine rounded up the top 10.
The returning Felipe Massa crashed early into the session and later spent the time in the garage. The team said it was a minor mistake and had no relation to his illness whatsoever.
