Dragon Racing has confirmed that Jose Maria Lopez will replace Neel Jani for the remainder of the 2017-2018 season.
Lopez raced in Formula E last season for DS Virgin Racing alongside Sam Bird, however, missed out on a seat with the team for season four, being replaced at the outfit by Alex Lynn despite securing two podium finishes in Paris and Montreal.
The Argentinian driver will make his debut for the American outfit next weekend at the Marrakesh ePrix on the Circuit International Automobile Moulay El Hassan – a circuit that Lopez is familiar with, having secured six podium finishes on six occasions in the WTCC.
After a disappointing opening weekend of the season which saw Dragon fail to secure a single point, Lopez will be keen to start the season off strong, aiming to propel the outfit higher in the Team Standings.
In addition to his surprise FE chance in 2018, Lopez is expected to remain part of Toyota’s LMP1 programme for the World Endurance Championship’s 2018/19 superseason.
There is no repeat of the WEC/FE clashes that hurt Lopez’s 2016/17 FE campaign, which means he should be free to contest the entirety of both championships.
